CERT Team Training Available:

The Black Hawk County Emergency Management Agency has received a grant to fund the training of neighborhood Citizen Emergency Response Teams (CERT).  CERT training promotes a partnership between emergency personnel and the residents they serve.  In the event of a disaster that temporarily overwhelms emergency services, trained CERT members can assist others until help arrives.  The learned skills are also useful in daily emergency situations.

The CERT training includes disaster preparedness, fire suppression, search and rescue techniques, emergency medical aid, psychology of disasters, team operations, and a component on terrorism.

A basic CERT should include at least three people form the neighborhood.  The Black Hawk County grant will allow the training of four groups of about 20 people.  Training will occur in 4 hour segments over 8 weeks (about 32 total hours) and will take place at EMA facility in Waterloo. The first session will begin in March; others will follow after the first group is completed.

There is no cost for the training and those completing the training will be provided hard hats, safety glasses and reflective vests for use in case these skills are ever really needed!

For further information contact Frank Magsamen, Coordinator for Black Hawk County Emergency Management Agency at 291-4373.

Landlords Recognized!!!

Neighbors in the Seerley Park area would like to recognize good landlords Sandy and Mel McCleary They own an apartment building on 524 Seerley Boulevard.  They have made a lot of improvements, the property is very well maintained, and they have made the extra effort to be good College Hill neighbors.

Thank you to the McCleary's and all landlords who are helping to improve and preserve the neighborhood.
