COLLEGE HILL NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION BOARD MEETING
MARCH 3, 2005
Attending: Mary Brammer, Kate McElligatt, Daryl Andersen, Lynn Nielsen, Jana Nelsen, Jeanette Winegarden, Jill Lankford
Absent: Tom Reisetter, Courtney Blake
Mary called the meeting to order. The February minutes were approved as read. Jana gave the Treasurer’s report. We have $870.50 in our checking account and $5,641 in our savings account. Kate presented a bill for costs associated with the Tree Lighting Ceremony for $14.64. A motion was made to accept and pay this bill.
Mary has been working hard on the newsletter. She has solicited articles from Mayor Crews, Loree Rackstraw, Jill Lankford, and Kate McElligatt. Mary pursued endorsements of support for the CHNA from community leaders and seven responded. Their comments will be disbursed throughout the newsletter. Mary aims to get a hard copy to designer Matt Rolland by the weekend. Mary requested help with proofreading. Kate, Lynn, and Daryl volunteered. Mary’s hope is to have the newsletter printed and mailed by March 15. She got two cost estimates on the printing--from Copies Plus and Parkade Press. Mary has sent in the documentation for nonprofit postage status but this was denied because we are 501C3 in our Articles of Incorporation. Copies Plus will print for 46 cents which includes a color front and back and 6 pages. The newsletter will have to be folded. Mary has looked into costs for “saturation mailing” and this will cost $1200. Mary is printing 200 for members outside of the postal route, landlords, city officials, and friends. Jeanette moved to accept the bid from Copies Plus. The motion carried.
We have two representatives on the Streetscape Committee, Mary and Jill. This committee was formed through the Planning Department to represent all constituencies. The plan will be carried out during the 2006-07 year.
Jill and Mary went to a Banner Project meeting sponsored by the Tourism Bureau. There are plans to put banners throughout the city. Rose and Mary met with Mary Huber of the Hearst Center. The estimated cost for the Hearst Center and CHNA to put banners up and down Seerley Boulevard is around $3000. No timeline for installing the banners has been decided upon. We will seek neighborhood input on the theme and design at a meeting on Tues. March 22 at 7:00 p.m. at University Book and Supply. Participating in this project may involve some fundraising activities. The possibility of having art (sculpture) in Seerley Park was also discussed.
The city has been working on revising the Overlay Ordinance. Copies were distributed to Board Members. This will go before Planning and Zoning and the City Council. Mary would like to see this happen over the summer. Mary has suggested revisions in meetings with the Planning Department.
Jill is working on a program for the annual meeting. It will be a Power Point presentation of children and international students giving their perspectives on the neighborhood. The annual meeting is April 19 at the Hearst Center. There will be wine and cheese from 6:30-7:00 followed by the program, a business meeting, and the election of officers. Kate, Jeanette, and Tom are at the end of their three year terms.
Mary is planning to meet with Community Main Street, the Historical Society, and the UNI Vice President of Finance and Administration.
The CHNA need more volunteers and people willing to be Committee Chairs.
The next Board Meeting is Thurs. April 7 at 6:30 p.m. There will be an opportunity for neighbors to give input on the banner project at 7:00 p.m.
